Travails of travel make being home a pleasure

We just got back from spending two weeks in Southern California -- San Diego for five days and Los Angeles for the remainder. In San Diego, we depended on travel guides and brochures for our decisions of what to do. We enjoyed the weather and the compact nature of the city. Public transportation and taxis are easy to use and inexpensive, so it made traveling to Old Town, Balboa Park and the Gas Lamp district pleasant and stress-free.From San Diego we took a train to L.A. to attend an Elderhostel about the art collections and great museums of the Los Angeles area. One of our early thoughts was to take the Amtrak train from Kelso to San Diego and then go by air back to LA and home. The cost was more than we wanted to spend, however, and 30 hours on a train seemed excessive. Instead, we took the train from San Diego to L.A.

Don’t throw away those paper cups!

This Tarzan ice-cream cup was made by Lily-Tulip Cup Corp. in the 1930s. Hake's Americana and Collectibles, of Timonium, Md., priced it at $518. You can find paper-cup collectibles for much less, but this one is rare and in mint condition.

Prison's structure makes lasting impression

The first morning Rodney Baird put his feet on the floor at the Sheridan prison, he could hear fellow inmates singing the "Brother to Brother" song, a motivational ditty with which they start the day.

"I remember thinking, 'What have I got myself into?' " said the 46-year-old Ridge Farm man. "It didn't take long to get with the program."

Lights out in Ontario on old-style bulbs

As part of a five-point energy conservation program announced yesterday, the energy and environment ministers said stores will only be allowed to sell compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) by 2012.

"It's lights out for old, inefficient bulbs in Ontario," Energy Minister Dwight Duncan told reporters at the spring Home Show at Exhibition Place.

"By making this one small change, we can make an enormous difference in the way we use electricity," he said, adding Ontario is the first province in Canada to launch the initiative.

Duncan said the old bulbs use "four times the power." Replacing 87 million cheaper incandescent bulbs now used in Ontario homes will save 6 million megawatt hours a year -- enough to power 600,000 homes, officials said. Government offices are installing CFLs as part of a commitment to reducing energy costs and green house gases, although some facilities such as hospitals will be allowed to continue using the old bulbs "for insurance purposes," Duncan said.
